Resources for Pag Needle Lace

To start, look for the black bar at the very top of the screen.  On its right hand edge is a search slot, for searches that operate on our network only.  Type in Pag and you will find the scattered discussions that have occurred before this Pag group was started.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuMHTNeUDrI&feature=youtu.be  This is the Lacemaking in Croatia video that has informed the world about Pag lace.  Only part of it is on true needle lace.  It also contains bobbin lace, filet lacis and sol lace.

The basic elements of Pag lace:

The lacecorner site, from which we got our Pag elements has disappeared from the internet. A great loss.

This one shows the elements of Pag diagrammed:

This large site, in Croatian and English, has lots of photos

and a page full of element symbols:

HOW TO MAKE PAG LACE:

Go through the images in  these albums, one after another.  They show the basic steps to laying a skeleton and connecting the parts. We have no verbal instructions - language problem - but the photos in sequence show each step in the process. There are over 200 photos covering the new elements in 3 pieces of lace.

This album, apparently from a lace event in Rijeka this year, has many photos of oya and Pag needle laces, some reticella, and also Idrija and Lepoglava bobbin lace.

Denise

As Liz says, there are no instruction books that we know about.  But look at the box directly under the Pag photo. The heading PAG NEEDLE LACE, Pattern 1 preceeds a set of albums which show the order of working in sequential photos. If you have never done needle lace, those photos may not be too helpful, you won't understand why they are significant. But if you have even just a little experience with needle lace those photos will explain the Pag method. And Linda has worked some of the laces with a different color thread for each stage of the process, so you can see what comes first, what 2nd, etc.

This may not be easy to follow, but it is the only instruction available anywhere outside of Pag itself. Several of us have succeeded in making some few small pieces, so it is possible.

Just get started and we will help as you go along.

No, Denise, I don't think there is a book to purchase on this type of lace.  It is usually a closely guarded secret in Pag, as to how they make it, but with Xaoijie's help, and Linda's perseverance, it has mainly been figured out here on this site.

During the last year or so we have had several new people join who were especially interested in Pag needle lace. But as far as I know, none of them have started. I am in the process of trying to make Xiaojie's sequential photos more readily useable as lessons. Some months ago I started making pdf files, but that had its own drawbacks (loss of some detail). Earlier this evening I tried to create what the software calls PAGES. But that proved too awkward. So now I am trying to create a series of DISCUSSIONS. If this works, it may be some weeks before it is ready to use.

Xiaojie, love your latest work. Gorgeous piece. How long did it take you to complete?

Comment by Xiaojie on April 23, 2015 at 2:35pm

Thanks Elizabeth, I missed you too, all of you. I posted new photos, an old lace, I suppose that lace was made by thread like giza 45. Because I bought DMC  cordonnet 100, and figured out that thread is thicker than this old lace. I am very excited about threads which is used many years ago, and all old laces are made by naturale thread.

Nice to have you back with us, Xiaojie.  We missed you!

Please show us some of the lace you have made recently. We love to see the photos of your work.
