No, I buy the ready made net, and just do the embroidery stitching of the design into the net.

The net is quite expensive, so I roughly stitch strips of old sheeting around the edges of the net - cut to about one inch bigger than I need on each side, so I don't waste much. This will hold it in the embroidery hoop while I work, and save wastage. Only 3 or 4 meshes on each side are wasted.

Do you do the entire thing--the net in the background and the darning over it?  I have tried to work something called filet stitch in needlelace before, to make that neat background grid, but with very uneven results.  This looks perfect!

I especially like pieces like this one with more than 1 stitch. The density variation makes it more interesting. Beautiful
