"thank you for the responses.  I agree that sometimes, it doesn't matter, but I'm working on a motif where threads will need to travel from one point to another and I'm calling that the wrong side."

"good point"
Jenny commented on Lorelei Halley's group Sol laces
"I think in theory the wrong side is facing up as you work, but in reality, when I take mine off the pad I cannot tell the difference. I do mainly needleweaving in mine though. If it was mainly knotting, it would make a difference"

"Linda According to Alex Stillwell, in her book, the side of the work facing the pattern is the right side. But she also says to look at both sides, and if the "wrong side" looks better, use that as the "right side"."

Profile Information

Your skill level
What kind of needle lace do you make, and how long have you been making it?
I only tried it out in the 1980s but did so badly I quit. I began again in 2010 with this group.
What kind or kinds of needle lace do you want to learn?
I will be happy just to make it neatly. Especially gros point and point de gaze. I also want to do my own contemporary designs.
Tell us about your other lace related interests.
I am an avid bobbin lacemaker and am interested in lace-like embroideries, especially pulled thread, Hardanger and other drawn thread embroideries. I am also interested in filet lacis and Teneriffe, altho I have not done any filet, and only tried out teneriffe. My laces are on my website, just a few pieces on flickr.

switching isp

Today I am switching to a different internet service provider. If t  here are glitches I may go silent for some time, until it gets straightened out. Just so you know.  The prospect freaks me out.

Current situation

Our host for the year July 2010 through July 2011 has been settled, and I have received enough donations to pay our ning fee. Consequently, I have deleted the temporary groups that I set up earlier.

Thank you Lorelei.  I appreciate it.

Question --- Is there a site that compares common characteristics of various laces?  Will some differences are visible, others are not to me.  What makes Burano lace different from Youghal etc....as an example.

Where do I find the NOTES? I've looked all through the drop downs and don't see them.

I'm so impressed with what I've seen! I'm thrilled that I stumbled into this group!

Thank you. It's a little mind boggling to find a group that is interested solely in needlelace. I do teach occasionally here in Austin, mostly Whitework and simple lace techniques. Y hands are becoming quite arthritic, so surface work is difficult, but I do want to continue exploring this fascinating world.

Thank you for your welcome. I am such a beginning beginner - still trying to find out, which techninques for lacemaking my granny might have used. I am quite sure, she knew different ways, and sometimes might even have combinded them. Some pieces i saw where more like your samples here than like other techniques, that i will try out as well. I hope i manage to learn it without her help. First videos here are very helpful to me. Thank you for your great work and teaching. It means a lot to me.
