I have been trying to add a profile picture. I does not seem to be working. There seem to be a lot of people without profile picks, so I wondered if there was a problem.

Kenmare Lace

Hi Judith,Nice to hear from you again. The thread may look heavy because the photo is much enlarged to show the stitches clearly.Although Kenmare is a generally a flat needlepoint lace, some Rose Point like the collar in the  photo and even some wonderful gros point were also made. Kenmare Lace was traditionally known, not just for its designs but also for its technical proficancy. Proof of this is the many medals won by the Kenmare lacemakers, in Paris, Chicago, Honiton and elsewhere. They can…See More

Profile Information

What kind of needle lace do you make, and how long have you been making it?
I have been making Kenmare needlepoint lace (needlelace) since 1985 when I learned it from the nuns of the Poor Clare Convent in Kenmare Co. Kerry, Ireland
What kind or kinds of needle lace do you want to learn?
I would like to learn to make Alencon and Point de Gaze
Tell us about your other lace related interests.
Though my training is as an art teacher most of my time nowadays is spent in developing and promoting Kenmare Lace. I run the Kenmare Lace and Design Centre in Kenmare where we demonstrate the making of Kenmare, Limerick, Carrickmacross, Irish Crochet and Bobbin lace.
We also have an exhibition of antique lace from the Poor Clare convent. We make and sell a little of Kenmare and the other Irish laces and also lace-making materials. Some of these items can also be bought from our on-line shop on our web-site. I also teach lacemaking in the winter when the centre usually closed except by appointment.

Thank you, Nora.  I was planning to take the bus from Killarney to Kenmare, but it seems it does not run on Sunday.  Is that true?  If so, I fear this wonderful plan for the day will not be possible.

Nora, my husband and I are going to be on an escorted tour of Ireland in May.  I would love to see the Kenmare Lace and Design Centre, but the only day I have free in your vicinity is Sunday May 13th and I fear your shop will not be open.  We are staying in Killarney and I could take the bus to Kenmare if you are open.  Please contact me.  My email is lholzberger@comcast.net.

I have changed our "Youghal group" into a "Youghal and Kenmare group", thinking that we will probably have small activity there until more of us gain enough experience.  I hope you will join that group.  Carolyn Wetzel has started Kenmare and asked for feedback there.  You are our only expert in that form, as far as I know.  (And I am glad you joined us.)

Dear Nora,

I received my Kenmare lace kit! Thanks - I look forward to trying it on the weekend. I have a few questions for you about it.

What kind of thread is in the kit? Should I use a blunt tip needle for the lace stitches or the sharp needle in the kit, same one as for couching? I see that the directions in the booklet end with the filling stitches. On page 7, what stitch is in the left-most petal and what is used on the outer edges of the petals? The petal looks like double Brussels point but I wasn't sure, and I didn't see mention of the edge stitch. The little flower is precious. Is the ladder-like edge between the petals and center rows of cord stitch separated by Spanish stitch, like the veins in the leaves?

Does most Kenmare lace have a cordonnet around the motifs or is it flat? If flat, is there a trick to keeping the internal edges neat and hiding the outline threads?

Thanks!!!! - Carolyn

Welcome.  Please go to NOTES and read the first three.  They cover our territory, guidelines and the software.

You may want to revise your profile.  Look for the box in the upper right hand corner with your name on it.  Click SETTINGS.  You have an email address attached to http://, so it doesn't work.  You are welcome to post a link to your website there.  But please don't use us for advertizing.  We are for the free exchange of questions, answers, ideas, advice.

We do have groups for Alencon and point de gaze, and a small number of our members have tried out those styles.
