"Strange question, but is there a particular reason you overcast and not just buttonhole the whole thing?"

"Making my first reticello piece. When the instructions say "overcast bar", does this mean simply winding the working thread around the cordonnet as opposed to button holin?"

Hi Shaundra, I have done quite a bit of Aemilia Ars lace from Italian books on the subject & unlike most needlelace in general, you don't start with a cordonnet in quite the same way. Each petal is done as you go with just a single line of cordonnet, filled in, then when the complete flower or leaf is done you lay a double length of threads over the top of the edge of each petal & buttonhole stitch around it to finish. I suggest that you try & get a copy of Barbara Cantelli's book, "L' Aemilia Ars di Antonilla Cantelli". It is excellent for following the patterns & then there are two others, Bordi & Fiori which have very good illustrations & steps for how to do the lace. All in Italian but the pics are very clear. Hope this helps you.
